2013 Battle of the Arts

The 2013 winners were:

First place: Freddie Melo

Second place: Timothy Johnson

Third place: Mary Cotter

The weather was perfect and the artists were amazing! The biggest complaint we had all day was that it was so hard to choose who to vote for.

You need to check out the YouTube video of Timothy Johnson painting: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zqVfIW9_S2c&feature=youtu.be

Thank you to the DCR for all their help with hosting this event, setting up and taking down all tables, chairs, and tents, providing the kids craft area and teacher for the kids, for advertising the event, and probably a million other things they did that I’m not even aware of! Special thanks to Maggi Brown, Regional Interpretive Coordinator for overseeing all of the DCR help.

Thank you to Osmani Rodriguez for agreeing to emcee this event! Osmani Rodriguez is an actor with extensive experience and always does a great job.

Thanks also to the volunteers that helped out:
Varda Haliday (and her kids)
Graham Waiting
Cheryl Murphy
Rosemarie Clinton
Michael Wilson

General

We kicked off our first Battle of the Arts in August 2010 and the now-annual throw-down just keeps getting bigger and better!

Hyde Park says “We have the Best Artists” and we had $400.00 in cash prizes to prove it. We called YOU out!

Artists brought their own art supplies and created their art from 3pm to 6pm, no finished pieces were allowed and we battled it out on location to see who is the best artist. Any medium and any subject matter was allowed (though it is a family event!).

Cash prizes:

1st place: $250.00
2nd place: $100.00
3rd place: $50.00

The public votes for the winners (all artists are encouraged to stack the deck in their favor by bringing all their friends and family to vote for them!)

2012 Battle of the Arts winners:

First place ($250): Frederick Melo
Second place ($100): Jerry Joseph

We even provide music for the smack down and have games and crafts for the kids. All free!

Thanks to Susan Palumbo and Sandy Spector for their invaluable help at the Artist registration/Welcome/Information table and for making sure everyone who showed up got a chance to vote for their favorite artist!

And, I would be remiss if I didn’t thank Jan Kenney for her tireless effort to find the entertainment, help to organize this event, and the multitude of things she does to keep the MAC going in general. I really don’t know what we would do without her.

I dare you!
