The Menino Art Center (The MAC)
26 Central Avenue
Hyde Park, MA 02136
The neighborhood of Hyde Park lies at the intersection of urban Boston and its suburban counterparts. The southernmost neighborhood in Boston, residents of this area enjoy the conveniences of an active city combined with the open space of suburbia. There is an unmatched spirit of kinship and neighborhood pride amongst the people of Hyde Park that is evident in the community’s small shops and restaurants, stimulated in large part by the Boston Main Streets program. However, the median income is well below the city average. The neighborhood is home to a diverse range of people, housing types and social groups, all committed to revitalizing this dynamic community.
The Hyde Park Art Association (HPAA) is one of those groups. HPAA has opened the Menino Art Center (The MAC). The MAC is located on the second floor of the George Robert White Building at 26 Central Avenue in Logan Square. With over 4,000 square feet of space The MAC offers classes to residents of all ages, gallery shows, performances and affordable artist studios. The MAC space has been generously donated by the George Robert White Trust and the Honorable Thomas M. Menino, as Chairman.
Established in 1988, the HPAA has a current membership of around 90 artists. The mission of the HPAA has been to stimulate an appreciation for the arts within the community. With The MAC, there will be an increase in support for local artists, and cultural opportunities for families. The MAC will enrich community life and serve as a unifying force within Hyde Park and surrounding neighborhoods.
The MAC is dedicated to expand its art outreach programs which will be modeled after the successful art instruction project at the Elihu Greenwood Elementary School. Some of the groups we hope to include are Boston Public Schools, the Citizen School, a national academic enrichment program that combines hands-on learning with academic support, and ETHOS, a seniors service organization.
The new arts center will serve as an important creative place to foster a strong partnership with local businesses and organizations that will spur economic development within Hyde Park and the surrounding communities.
